Frequently Asked Quesitons About a Wedding Cake

There are commonly questionswhen choosinga wedding cake that come up, so I have tried provide on some information that may be helpful.

Why Have a Wedding Cake?

In ancient Greece, the newly married bride and groom would be showered with wheat grain to promote a fertile marriage. In early English weddings, baskets of crackers were given to guests. Any crackers that were left over were given to the poor as a good gesture to the local community. The middle ages saw sweet buns stacked into tall, pyramid like piles. This was to encourage the bride and groom to kiss each other over the pile. A successful couple would have many children and a prosperous marriage.

The Structure of a Wedding Cake.

A wedding cake is made up of tiers and layers. Each tier has two layers and a typical cake has three tiers or six layers. A cake can be almost any shape you care for however the most traditional is a round cake. A decision you will need to make is will your cake be stacked orseparated meaning do you want to separate the tiers from each other. Typical spacing ranges from 3 inches to 5 inches. You can be creative and use thing such as over turned glasses and candle stick holders to separate the tiers, making the cake more unique.

Frosting

The most popular frosting is buttercream. This can be colored to match any of your wedding colors. Fondant is used if you would like a smooth surface on your cake as seen in some of my cakes in the cake galleries. These concerns can be discussed at a consultation and I can make your sample cake to reflect some of these options before you make your final decision. Flavors such as hazelnut and chocolate can be added to the frosting.. The frosting you choose may dictate how the cake is decorated and this can be discussed at your consultation.

How big a cake do I need?

On the average a wedding cake for 150 people is a cake with three separate tiers of an 8" on top of a 10" on top of a 12" cake. If you are having a smaller gathering, we can taylor any cake to you needs.

Cup Cake Trees Faux cakes and Sheet Cakes

Cup cake trees are very popular now and a wonderful way to offer your guests a variety of flavors .There are so many different ways to present a cupcake dessert that it is truly only limited by your imagination. One important thing to think about when considering having cupcakes is your guests may eat them like cookies- one may not be enough!

Faux cakes are dummie cakes that are decorated with buttercream to look like the real thing. There are a variety of reasons you may choose this option and they can be discussed at a consultation.

Buying extra cake in the form of a sheet cake that will be served from the kitchen may be the option you are looking for to ensure you have enough cake for all your guests or if you wish to offer more flavors to your guests at the reception.

Toppers

Popular toppers to a wedding cake are fresh flowers or porcelain bride and groom statues. The Flowers can be fresh silk or sugar. Fresh flowers would be provided by your florist set up on your cake at the reception location the day of the wedding. Try to think outside the box when choosing your topper. A picture of the two of you in a silver frame looks just a nice and makes the cake that much more personable.
